The novel Legend by Marie Lu is like a meal that’s so delicious, you won’t be able to wait for seconds. It probably won’t help you achieve any lifelong goals, but once you read it, it will leave you feeling a little happier and make you want to tell all your friends about that awe- inspiring book you were reading all night. Legend is a book about June, a fifteen year old government official and Day, a fifteen year old fugitive living on the streets of Los Angeles. This book tells the story of how a young girl serves justice for the ones she loves and how a young man’s whole life was unexpectedly changed by a mysteriously beautiful girl on the streets of the poor sectors of Los Angeles.

The book Legend is about two characters who are left with some very hard decisions to make, but are forced to make them. June, must go after Day and take him down for multiple crimes he’s committed, including supposedly killing Metias. Day must leave his family behind and make his mom think he is dead just to keep his family safe. The plot of this book has a lot of unexpected twists at the times that you least expect them. For example, the whole world believes that Day is a murderer and a thief that failed his trial when the government really made the people believe the wrong thing, and they will always believe that. This is discovered at the end of the book when June investigates her brother’s murder further and figures out that an old family friend is the guilty party. I love how while you are reading one page of the book, you think it’s totally cliche, but then when you flip the page, the whole story takes an unexpected turn and you are left completely astounded by the outcome. I’m sure after you read it you will feel the same way.
The two main characters of this novel, June and Day, are magnificently convincing and mischievous fifteen year olds who live in Los Angeles as two completely different people who somehow have so much in common. June is from one world that seems to be a utopia, while Day is from a world where you must work day in and day out just to put a meal on the table. Though throughout the book they try and convince themselves they are not in love with one another, they still believe they should be together. June’s state of mind is inspired by her brother, Metias, because even when June was at her worst moments, he still loved her no matter what and that is now how she feels about Day. Day’s state of mind is inspired by his older brother, John, too who still fought for and defended Day even though he abandoned his family and became a fugitive. John would do anything for Day even if it meant losing his life and that says a lot about Day’s character and John’s character. As I said before, the characters of this book are extremely convincing because the feelings they have and the actions those feelings lead to are completely relatable to the reader, even though we will probably never be in the same situations they were in. Overall I loved the characters in this book and I found myself caring for each and every one of them, except the antagonists of course, as if they were real people.
This book had a very strong theme in my opinion. After i read the book, i felt i was a little bit wiser, and i felt rejuvenated. This book taught me that love is greater than any crime you can commit and that love will always find a way. The theme is revealed when June makes a very risky decision and sacrificed many lives, so she could save Day’s. I think this was a very important lesson to learn because love is something we all will feel at some point in our lives and we must not let anything ruin it. I think that although the theme was hidden within the events of the book, the author did an exquisite job of getting the theme into our minds. Overall, i think that i learned a lot about life in this novel and i also found my new favorite book.
